This is a quote from Victoria Osteen: “When we obey God, we’re not doing it for God…we’re doing it for ourself. Because God takes pleasure when we’re happy. Do good ’cause God wants you to be happy. When you come to church, when you worship Him, you’re not doing it for God, really. You’re doing it for yourself because that’s what makes God happy.” That is nonsense. Unfortunately she is not an exception, but the rule. We have seen the evangelical church taking that path of self-fulfillment and self-realization. It seems that the whole universe, including God, is working for us so we could be happy.
That could not be farther from the truth of Scriptures and Christianity. This kind of religion has nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus and the New Testament. There, the Christian life does not revolves around ourselves. It is the opposite.
We are called to be disciples – When Jesus called His disciples, He did not call them to be happy, successful, and prosperous. He called them to be disciples, which means apprentice or followers. Jesus was clear when He called His disciples that their lives as Christians would be very difficult. They would have to deny themselves, to take up the cross, and follow Him. That was the call. He also warned them that things would become tough in their families, work, and social life. The successful Christian was not part of the plan. It is a new trend that is taking over our spiritual lifestyle.
We are called to serve God and others – Some churches and preachers are promoting the idea that if we become a Christian everything will be OK. The church and even God will be ready to serve us and help us with anything that we need. I am sorry, I have bad news for you. THAT IS NOT THE TRUETH! We are called to become a servant, a slave, not only to God, but also to each other. The Christians today have the same attitude that our culture has- a sense of entitlement. God and the church owe them something. When you go to church we are encouraged to expect everybody to serve us and put us on a pedestal, but in the New Testament the Christian or disciple is called to servanthood PERIOD.
We are called to worship only God – I will say it again: We are called to worship ONLY GOD. Today in our churches we worship the music style, the pastor, the worship leader, the band or the choir, the sanctuary, etc. We have seem some preachers and worship leaders taking the place of the Messiah, and being treated as someone more important than God. We are worshiping everything but God Himself. We even want to dictate and pick the kind of worship we want to have, as it God left that choice for us to make. Jesus made clear to the Samaritan woman that the real worship should be based in the Scriptures and come from inside and not based in exterior aspects.
This is what every disciple of Christ should do.
Have a blessed week,
